Summer is heating up!
But the food down at Schenectady Greenmarket will keep you cool. One of the great things about summer produce is that it doesn’t need to be cooked to be enjoyed. Crunchy carrots and cucumbers dipped in hummus are a cool snack. Sweet peaches and yummy berries tossed with honey is a refreshing dessert. Have you though of boiling a chicken in the morning and eating it chilled for dinner? The more robust flavors of the local produce make them perfect for simply prepared meals. Stop by the market for all you need to keep you cool and your food local .
What’s fresh this week
Barber’s Farm: Corn, potatoes and melons are abundant – plus cole crops, greens, squash and cucumbers. We’ve expanded our variety of fresh cut herbs and will continue to pick squash blossoms (pre order to make sure you get some).
Mariaville Farms: Try our shiitake mushrooms marinated and canned by the market’s own Susie of Susie’s Climax Creations; or on a tasty flatbread from Naga Bakehouse; fresh mushrooms too. Don’t forget our fresh eggs; never frozen chicken and duck; black Angus beef and pasture raised lamb.
Dutch Desserts: European-style fruit tarts made with local fruit, plus our famous fudgy chocolate tart with Belgian chocolate. Stop by for a sample.
Mosaics by Christine just won “Best in Show” at the Delaware Avenue Street Fair last week – come see why: a new chess set, tables and lazy susans.
Naga Bakehouse: Grilled shiitake mushroom flatbreads prepared with delicious mushrooms grown by our market neighbor Mariaville Farms! Come grab a stuffed kale bread prepared with kale grown by our other market neighbor, Quincy Farms! ‘Tis the season to create food with ingredients that are all around us! We’ll also have stuffed ricotta fruit bread.
EuroDelicacies This week we have garden fresh eggplant and stuffed grape leaves!!
Cafe NOLA: Blackened chicken Caesar salad; grilled portabella mushroom sandwich; and blackened catfish or chicken sandwhiches topped with sweet peppers and mozzarella cheese. Iced tea, sweet tea, Arnold Palmers or fresh squeezed lemonade: raspberry, strawberry, or cherry.
