What’s Fresh This Week – July 1

Happy Fourth of July!

Well, almost. Independence Day is next Wednesday, and that means parties, picnics, and celebrations with friends and family. You’ll need to stop by Schenectady Greenmarket this Sunday to pick up all of your party foods – fresh leafy salad greens, delicious hummus and salsas, crisp veggies for dipping (or just plain snacking), wine and beer, and delectable desserts made from the sweetest local fruits. What a way to celebrate our nation’s 236th Birthday! See you at the market.

What’s Fresh This Week

Quincy Farm will have delicious fresh cucumbers; golden and green zucchini; cole slaw cabbage; baby arugula; herbs; carrots and more!

Barber’s Farm: Cauliflower; romanesque and regular broccoli; red cabbage – green and pointy head; tomatoes and peppers from our high tunnels; the first candy onions; shelling- and snap-peas; parsley; basil, and garlic scapes.

Shushan Valley Hydro Farm: We will have supersweet cherry tomatoes; beefsteak and vine cluster tomatoes; sweet and crunchy baby cucumbers; seedless Asian cucumbers; delicious green pole beans; lettuce; arugula; watercress; sweet basil; cilantro and many more herbs.

Maynard Farm: White and yellow peaches, yellow sugar plums, apricots, sweet cherries, tree-ripened black plums, blueberries, raspberries, and Lodi apples. Veggies: snow, snap and English shell peas; romanesco and white cauliflower; purple and greeen broccoli; garlic; rainbow chard; collards; two kinds of kale; zukes and cukes.

The Hudson-Chatham Winery: Looking for that picnic perfect wine? We’ve got what you need for your Fourth of July celebration. Choose from our crisp, dry Seyval Blanc white wine, one of our summertime favorite “sweets” – Ghent Blush and Lindenwald White – or a classic sparkling wine, our Blanc de Blanc. We even have a dry red for burgers and steaks. Celebrate summer with local wines that will be the hit of the party.

Freddy’s Rockin’ Hummus: Check out our newest flavors – Kalamata olive and Chinese chive with cracked pepper. We’ll also have our classic original, garlic lemon, roasted jalapeno, and roasted pepper flavors. Stop by and taste what you’ve been missing – see you on Sunday!

Skinner’s Sugarbush: Blueberry, peach and strawberry rhubarb pielets; peach mini cakes, and delicious maple syrup will be available. Sample our new lingonberry shortbread and potato chip crunch cookie. And at last, my cookbook “The Naturally Good Cook” which contains many of my recipes from the market, has been published and is for sale!

Naga Bakehouse offers delicious and filling wood-fired Artisan breads shaped and baked by hand! Come by for a salt-and-caraway stick, a flatbread, or the ever-popular stuffed breads. We’re always trying new toppings and fillings – think kale, garlic, parmesan or pears with gorgonzola! See you on Sunday.

Funk Farms will have apple-raspberry pies and strawberry rhubarb pies made from fresh local produce.

Sororia Organics has a fresh batch of herbal facial cleanser – keeps skin clean without drying. We also have our new eco soy candles and of course, our fabulous soap!

Three Chicks and a P: Specializing in fresh homemade tahini-free hummus. We’ll have all your favorites this week, including cilantro lime and hot habanero. Stop by and sample our fresh homemade mango black bean salsa and other yummy surprises! Kick up your Fourth of July celebration with hummus themed party platters!

Our Daily Eats: Fresh basil pesto 2 for $13 this week: pair with local tomatoes, mozzarella and you have a great appetizer!  Made with care in the Hudson Valley.

Chick and Hen Baking Company: Empanadas, spinach and feta pie, Roman pizzas, sesame chicken with apricot mustard, and quiche. we’ll also have cold tomato gazpacho, roasted beet salad, Israeli couscous, and cool sesame noodles. Giant eclairs; strawberry pies; hazelnut chocolate brownies and marbled meringues (both gluten free). See you there!

Café NOLA: Blackened chicken or catfish sandwiches; portabella mushroom sandwiches; Mariaville Farm’s Black Angus burgers; fresh squeezed lemonade: cherry, raspberry or strawberry; sweet iced tea, or Arnold Palmers.

Orenda Yoga will be leading Zumba demonstrations every half hour starting at 10am. Zumba is an effective, easy to follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning, dance fitness routine.
